October 10, 1987 "When the leader of an alien culture takes a romantic interest in Lt. Yar, he claims her for his own, to the dismay of his own wife, who, in turn, challenges Tasha in a fight to the death." ~IMDB The one officially disavowed, the one they wished they hadn't made, the one that was too racist... I actually thought I'd deleted this from my thumbdrives, but since I have it still, I won't just skip it, I'll watch it, and call out it's badness... And, since I'm starting this website with TNG S1, and this is so early, it made me decide to actually rewatch every episode that I skip, and track them here. ---- Stardate 41235.25 opens on beautiful planet, before the ship flies in Ligon 11 Has a vaccine needed by Styris IV Cargo Bay 1 is where they meet the Ligaron, they use their own transporters. five guard, one drops the red carpet, before Lutan beams up shiny tribal costumes "A woman, chief of security?" Tasha refuses to allow Picard to be directly handed box, takes down the Ligaron guard. Kinda excessive. He did try to get passed her, and her character in the trial with Q fit this action, but it's still kinda crazy. Lutan is turned on, and thinks Tasha is what he's been looking for... Theme Data carries in a sculpture of a horse as a gift. China's 13th Century dynasty Lutan appreciates, gives speech, everyone applauds.... Lots of sexist views, gender roles...excessive tribal stereotype speech patterns, says they have less tech, but a necessary vaccine Tasha takes them to the holodeck for some martial arts training Lutan says that Tasha's skills impress him, and he likes her, Tasha looks uncomfortable Lutan kidnaps Tasha Picard detonates torpedoes in orbit as a display of intimidation Troi says that all the males were sexually attracted to Tasha... Wesley accompanies Beverly on the turbo lift again to the bridge, but waits in the lift Dr Crusher pleads with Picard for the vaccine Death from the plague is horrific Dr Crusher wants Wesley to be invited onto the bridge Picard invites Wesley to sit at Ops, next to LeForge, "temporarily" Data says the Ligarons are tribal, like Native Americans, says "counting coup" (sp?) that he says is in the obscure language known as French.....talking to Picard, who is from France....eesh...Data should know better than that. And there's no way that French, one of the most widely spoken languages on Earth, would become obscure....even if a global language were adopted 150-175 years prior, which is the earliest possible for a global language to take over Earth... Picard is annoyed, Riker tells Data to drop it. Lutan thinks he's in the right to steal Tasha, and Picard must humbly ask for Tasha to be returned... Troi wants Picard to take the away mission, Riker is absolutely against it. Picard has to go, due to customs of requiring the leader negotiate. Lutan introduces Yareena, his first wife, Picard demands to see Tasha Lutan expects that she be asked for, despite taking her, "please is for getting her back" Ceremony is of extreme importance. banging sticks together.... Abducting someone is legal for their customs Lutan calls for Tasha to be his First One Yareena objects and challenges Tasha to the death Picard objects Lutan says Tasha will not leave... All hell is breaking lose... Troi "Lutan is such a basic male image." And then tricks Tasha into thinking about Lutan's sexuality Troi starts basically wagering that Tasha would win the fight in trying to convince Picard to accept the fight for the vaccine there's hint of Lutan not having wealth, because women are the wealth, or have the wealth, the women own the land Picard say's he'll order Tasha to fight, and gives a blessing to Lutan Geordie shaving with not the remote razer that Data gave him Data tries humor....kiddilies.... Data and Geordie beam down, Picard tells them to analyze the weapons that Tasha might end up using in the combat It's all about following the Prime Directive, following a Code of Honor The captain is entitled to give a speech, ....lol Tasha and Yareena argue, with pointless dialogue from Tasha that really doesn't fit her character, or the reality of the situation. Tasha wants to fight for the vaccines, and not for lutan Wesley is directed to Ops again spiked gauntlet with a beak as the weapons. fighting in a cage or sorts gauntlet gets electrocuted off, hits random guy watching, he dies as the fight is paused for a moment Lutan's 2nd in command calls for Yareena to be careful...gets concerned, gives away his game. Tasha hits Yareena in the back, then lays on Yareena and gets beamed to the Enterprise, Dr Crusher gives the antidote Vaccine is authorized to be taken, Picard calls for five to be beamed up, taking Lutan and his security, Taken to see that Yareena is revived. Dr Crusher threatens Lutan with the gauntlet as proof of Yareena's dying Lutan loses everything, Yareena takes his security guard as her first because that's where the love actually was, but Lutan takes the position of 2nd. Picard walks onto the bridge to see Wesley at Ops, Riker says he was filling in, Picard says we'll see that he gets another chance They head off for Styris IV at Warp 3 end... ---- I got distracted with family stuff part way through, tried to keep on task...might have missed some things.
