[[Category:Discovery]] ugh, bad new show, imo. it's starts almost cool, Klingons, but they speak very slowly.... Then we get to the dull Bernam lost on a desert planet with Giorgio. They open up a water well to save a community, probably violating the prime directive....if that exists at the time. Giorgio starts walking, as if she somehow can plan the foot paths to make a combadge visible from space....even though their footprints could never be seen. Absolutely ridiculous. And then the ship comes down and floats a few hundred feet above the planet's surface....very unrealistic...even for sci-fi. Theme - very cool graphics, not a ship flying through space, I don't like it. If my memory is right, a former housemate of my sister's and her then boyfriend and eventually husband worked either on the Discovery intro or the Enterprise intro, I don't remember which, but I do remember the discussion of hating the intro as a Star Trek intro, but absolutely praising the graphics and what the intro is for itself regardless of what I want a Star Trek intro to be, which is a ship flying through space...not the tech.... Cool new aliens, odd uniforms that don't fit anything we've had before, remotely. Bernam has no emotion, which being raised on Vulcan might be expected, but it makes for a dull character this early without that information of her upbringing. "Something's out there but no one can tell me what or where it is." cliche. ugh. Sensors don't work, so they use their eyes and a telescope. Cool use of telescope, but poorly acted scene from Bernam and Giorgio. Curiosity killed the cat.... They fly out in a space suit to the unknown object, no shuttle, very dramatic. Computer voice is bad!!! ew. it's like a video game mission, and bad!! Attempting to be like The Motion Picture, and failing miserably radiation is bad....messes up tech....creates health risk...cliche.... communication failure.....cliche.... unknown object....chiche.... so much "impossible to identify" Landing on the craft triggers an alarm....cliche Alien shows up mysteriously. Refuses to communicate, cliche... more cliche of tech not working, time running out for radiation poisoning... cracked helmet, echoing communication asking for response with none available....cliche Klingon death ritual....even though Klingons think of the body as an empty shell that should be disposed of, here's suddenly a history of deep ritual and honor to the body, not just the soul of the warrior...a weak roar warning the dead that a warrior is on his way..... (TNG reference) Flashback.... cliche propaganda to demonize klingons and traumatize young Bernam. BOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!!!!! Serek, well played. Bernam in medical rehab, leaves before it's done....cliche Bernam warns of klingons while the bridge crew thinks she's delusional.....cliche... Klingons haven't been seen for a hundred years....huh!?!?!? Bernam calls for targeting Klingon ship, an obvious threat of war.... very bad idea that goes poorly....obviously.... Klingons decloak, panic... Echoed communication that isn't responded to....cliche... More slow Klingon speech... Klingons electing a new leader... albino Son of None steps forward, Voq. He burns his hand to prove his strength... The Klingons really do look spectacular, if they were in any other sci-fi series and not called Klingons.... More failing to communicate....cliche Ship covered in caskets... Saru says they should leave, Bernam says that's no longer possible....cliche Holocommunicator??? that was new teck in DS9, and only used once, why is Discovery using it?? that tech definitely did not exist at the time this is suppose to take place. Giorgio tries to think of diplomatic solution, Bernam suggests thinking like a soldier. Klingons activate an extremely bright light....with bad noise...ouch...cruel cliche. Bernam uses secure communication to Serek. He immediately condemns her emotions. He says there's a new star visible, even though it would take many, many years for the light to reach Vulcan.... Bernam demands to know how Vulcans held the Klingons at bay...then demands that Giorgio fires first on Klingons..."a vulcan hello." Bernam is stubborn and demanding that they go to war. Gets scolded off the bridge. Giorgio is much more moral than Bernam Bernam gives the vulcan neck pinch to Giorgio, then takes over the bridge, lies, and calls for an attack... Saru recognizes that she's wrong... Giorgio comes back at the last moment and tells Bernam to stand down....cliche..... Then the rest of the Klingon fleet arrives...really dislike the way they bampf into the area.... Episode ends.... ---- eesh. so many cliche plots. So bad!! right from the get go, worse than any other Trek series. Doesn't follow any established lore, just makes up things that would be cool if not violations of lore.
