ugh, bad new show, imo. it's starts almost cool, Klingons, but they speak very slowly....

Then we get to the dull Bernam lost on a desert planet with Giorgio. They open up a water well to save a community, probably violating the prime directive....if that exists at the time.

Giorgio starts walking, as if she somehow can plan the foot paths to make a combadge visible from space....even though their footprints could never be seen. Absolutely ridiculous.

And then the ship comes down and floats a few hundred feet above the planet's surface....very unrealistic...even for sci-fi.

Theme - very cool graphics, not a ship flying through space, I don't like it. If my memory is right, a former housemate of my sister's and her then boyfriend and eventually husband worked either on the Discovery intro or the Enterprise intro, I don't remember which, but I do remember the discussion of hating the intro as a Star Trek intro, but absolutely praising the graphics and what the intro is for itself regardless of what I want a Star Trek intro to be, which is a ship flying through space...not the tech....

Cool new aliens, odd uniforms that don't fit anything we've had before, remotely.

Bernam has no emotion, which being raised on Vulcan might be expected, but it makes for a dull character this early without that information of her upbringing.

"Something's out there but no one can tell me what or where it is." cliche. ugh.

Sensors don't work, so they use their eyes and a telescope. Cool use of telescope, but poorly acted scene from Bernam and Giorgio.

Curiosity killed the cat.... They fly out in a space suit to the unknown object, no shuttle, very dramatic.

Computer voice is bad!!! ew. it's like a video game mission, and bad!!

Attempting to be like The Motion Picture, and failing miserably

radiation is bad....messes up tech....creates health risk...cliche....

communication failure.....cliche....

unknown object....chiche.... so much "impossible to identify"

Landing on the craft triggers an alarm....cliche

Alien shows up mysteriously. Refuses to communicate, cliche...

more cliche of tech not working, time running out for radiation poisoning... cracked helmet, echoing communication asking for response with none available....cliche

Klingon death ritual....even though Klingons think of the body as an empty shell that should be disposed of, here's suddenly a history of deep ritual and honor to the body, not just the soul of the warrior...a weak roar warning the dead that a warrior is on his way..... (TNG reference)

Flashback.... cliche propaganda to demonize klingons and traumatize young Bernam. BOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!!!!!

Serek, well played.

Bernam in medical rehab, leaves before it's done....cliche

Bernam warns of klingons while the bridge crew thinks she's delusional.....cliche...

Klingons haven't been seen for a hundred years....huh!?!?!?

Bernam calls for targeting Klingon ship, an obvious threat of war.... very bad idea that goes poorly....obviously.... Klingons decloak, panic...

Echoed communication that isn't responded to....cliche...

More slow Klingon speech...

Klingons electing a new leader... albino Son of None steps forward, Voq. He burns his hand to prove his strength...

The Klingons really do look spectacular, if they were in any other sci-fi series and not called Klingons....

More failing to communicate....cliche

Ship covered in caskets...

Saru says they should leave, Bernam says that's no longer possible....cliche

Holocommunicator??? that was new teck in DS9, and only used once, why is Discovery using it?? that tech definitely did not exist at the time this is suppose to take place.

Giorgio tries to think of diplomatic solution, Bernam suggests thinking like a soldier.

Klingons activate an extremely bright light....with bad noise...ouch...cruel cliche.

Bernam uses secure communication to Serek. He immediately condemns her emotions. He says there's a new star visible, even though it would take many, many years for the light to reach Vulcan....

Bernam demands to know how Vulcans held the Klingons at bay...then demands that Giorgio fires first on Klingons..."a vulcan hello."

Bernam is stubborn and demanding that they go to war. Gets scolded off the bridge.

Giorgio is much more moral than Bernam

Bernam gives the vulcan neck pinch to Giorgio, then takes over the bridge, lies, and calls for an attack... Saru recognizes that she's wrong...

Giorgio comes back at the last moment and tells Bernam to stand down....cliche.....

Then the rest of the Klingon fleet arrives...really dislike the way they bampf into the area....

Episode ends....

----

eesh. so many cliche plots. So bad!! right from the get go, worse than any other Trek series. Doesn't follow any established lore, just makes up things that would be cool if not violations of lore.

I've been a fan of Star Trek since I was a kid, early 90s, watching TNG's later half first airings, and everything since. I've watched TNG, DS9, and Voyager hundreds of times, quite possibly literally... Figured maybe I'd do something while watching again.

I am starting this page on June 18, 2026, we'll see how much I actually keep up with it...it'll take work to redesign the interface to somewhat LCARS...

The goal of this is to give my opinions about each episode and the scenes within, though as I'm starting it, it's more of a literal description of scene for scene, but I will work on that...I'm starting with TNG Season 1, which, the first few episodes, leave little for opinion, beyond the obvious.......... But I'll revisit episodes and add more to my discussions each time I rewatch, or so is my goal.

Ligon 11

Has a vaccine needed by Styris IV

Cargo Bay 1 is where they meet the Ligaron, they use their own transporters.

five guard, one drops the red carpet, before Lutan beams up

shiny tribal costumes

"A woman, chief of security?"

Tasha refuses to allow Picard to be directly handed box, takes down the Ligaron guard. Kinda excessive. He did try to get passed her, and her character in the trial with Q fit this action, but it's still kinda crazy.

Lutan is turned on, and thinks Tasha is what he's been looking for...

Theme

Data carries in a sculpture of a horse as a gift. China's 13th Century dynasty

Lutan appreciates, gives speech, everyone applauds....

Lots of sexist views, gender roles...excessive tribal stereotype speech patterns, says they have less tech, but a necessary vaccine

Tasha takes them to the holodeck for some martial arts training

Lutan says that Tasha's skills impress him, and he likes her, Tasha looks uncomfortable

Lutan kidnaps Tasha

Picard detonates torpedoes in orbit as a display of intimidation

Troi says that all the males were sexually attracted to Tasha...

Wesley accompanies Beverly on the turbo lift again to the bridge, but waits in the lift

Dr Crusher pleads with Picard for the vaccine

Death from the plague is horrific

Dr Crusher wants Wesley to be invited onto the bridge

Picard invites Wesley to sit at Ops, next to LeForge, "temporarily"

Data says the Ligarons are tribal, like Native Americans, says "counting coup" (sp?) that he says is in the obscure language known as French.....talking to Picard, who is from France....eesh...Data should know better than that. And there's no way that French, one of the most widely spoken languages on Earth, would become obscure....even if a global language were adopted 150-175 years prior, which is the earliest possible for a global language to take over Earth...

Picard is annoyed, Riker tells Data to drop it.

Lutan thinks he's in the right to steal Tasha, and Picard must humbly ask for Tasha to be returned...
Vaccine is authorized to be taken, Picard calls for five to be beamed up, taking Lutan and his security,

Taken to see that Yareena is revived.

Dr Crusher threatens Lutan with the gauntlet as proof of Yareena's dying
Lutan loses everything, Yareena takes his security guard as her first because that's where the love actually was, but Lutan takes the position of 2nd.
Picard walks onto the bridge to see Wesley at Ops, Riker says he was filling in, Picard says we'll see that he gets another chance

Stardate 41209.2

Running at Warp 7 to rendezvous with science vessel SS Tsiolkovsky, monitoring the collapse of a Red Dwarf

Other ship's crew is crazy, woman asks if there are pretty boys, and says they're going to have a real blow out here....emergency hatch gets blown, with excitement, as they all get blown out into space

Away team beams into messy hallway.

Hallways look exactly like those on the Enterprise D, which were also in the 1701-A refit, have the halls looked the same for every ship between the A and D??? despite differences in ever other aspect of the ship decor?

Away team finds the opened hatch, Rikers says they were sucked out, Data corrects as blown out

Tasha finds 10 frozen people.

Geordie finds several naked frozen people in a room, one in a closet, he gets infected,

80 people on that ship, all dead. very few people for such a large ship, well, a medium sized ship, definitely should be well more than only 80.

intro theme

The Tsiolkovsky's saucer section is mounted between the nacelles, requiring passing through the edge of the nacelles to get down the support arms to the lower hull of the ship.

Picard calls for transporters to be set to maximum decontamination before bringing the away team back, apparently it's not enough...

Geordie scans ok by Crusher, but is sweating, and gets snarky about the temperature, etc.

Dr Crusher quarantines Geordie to sickbay, but doesn't quarantine herself or Riker, etc, who were near Geordie

Riker asks Data about The Naked Time from TOS, thinking he had heard about someone showering in their clothes...

Geordie escapes because the sickbay is not locked off. Bad quarantine by Dr Crusher...total failure.

Geordie finds Wesley with a miniature tractor beam emitter, floating a chair. And then Wesley's voice mimicker...absolutely should be confiscated...Geordie likes it, and infects Wesley

Geordie gets depressed over not being able to see like Tasha can. Geordie infects Tasha

Picard and Troi gather around Geordie...definitely no quarantine...

Apparently nothing Dr Crusher can scan for reveals anything

Riker and Data continue searching for information from Kirk's ship.

Data notices Picard infected

Tasha breaks into Deanna's quarters, to try on Deanna's clothes...Tasha infects Deanna

"Snootful"

Wesley showing off his tractor beam to his mom. She sends him to their quarters. She realizes Wes is infected.

Tasha shaking her ass......and then a few short skirts...Tasha makes out with random science officer in engineering, infecting him.

Exploding star is a problem....but not a big one, they can out run it.

Wesley fakes Picard's voice to send chief engineer to the bridge, and the assistant chief to medical, and he takes over...

Wesley fakes Picard over the ship-wide coms, giving Wesley command of the ship.

Wesley puts engineering crew behind a force field, then promises dessert before ever meal.

Assistant engineer swears to be faithful to Captain Wesley...

Data repeating a limrick...."there was a young lady from Venus, whose body was shaped like a ......" lol

Tasha drunk on coms, Picard sends Data to escort her to sickbay....Tasha is a beautifully sexy outfit...gloriously sexy....and she seduces Data. And we get her backstory of being abandoned as a child and abused, before she lays with Data.

Data claims his fully functionality, programmed in multiple techniques and methods of pleasuring...

Isolinear ships have been removed

Deanna tries seducing Riker because she feels everyone's horniness...Riker touches her face, infecting him.

Beverly tries to cure Geordie, doesn't work

Riker brings in Deanna, touches Beverly, finally infecting her....

Wesley refuses to give control back to Picard

Wesley learns he's drunk. "I feel strange, but also good."

Wesley calls Picard "Skipper" while saying tractor beams are his speciality

Riker and chief engineer trying to cut Wes' power

Beverly gets hot...

Data comes onto the bridge, drunk as a skunk, comparing himself to humans. He gets emotional

Beverly calls Picard to his office

Data falls over

Crusher comes onto Picard....he resists, barely

Worf still not infected

Star explodes

Ship doesn't respond to Worf trying to get the ship away

Assistant engineer playing with chips

Chief gets the force field down, scolds the assistant like he's a child.

Very cool tower that the assistant has built out of the control chips, that took prop effort more than just simple stacking........

Data called down to put the control chips back into place faster than any human could, but not fast enough...

Estimated 8 or 9 minutes until the star fragment hits, but Data will be slightly slower...

Beverly and Jean-Luc flirting more with first names rather than titles.

Wesley suggests using the ship's tractor beams as a repulsor beam, "Why not just see it in your head."

Beverly starts giving a successful antidote, with last minute flirting with Picard

Wes hits the repulsor beam against the Tsiolkosky, giving them a push, equal and opposite reactions, giving them just enough time for Data to finish putting away the chips and the bridge to engage engines

Picard credits Wesley for saving the day. And credit to his science teacher.

Data shakes Wesley's hand

Tasha to Data, it never happened...lol

Picard, we'll have a fine crew, if we avoid temptation.....Tasha side glances at Data, Riker and Troi make eye contact.

End

September 28, 1987

The long pilot of TNG. Two episodes mushed into one.

"On the maiden mission of the U.S.S. Enterprise (NCC-1701-D), an omnipotent being knows as Q challenges the crew to discover the secret of a mysterious base in an advanced and civilized fashion." ~IMDB

This one will be pretty literal as to what happens in the episode, I plan on being less literal and more objective to how I feel about scenes rather than solely what happened in each scene...practice is the goal, this is the first analysis that I'm writing for this website. It will get better.

----

And so we begin TNG, with the intro theme.

"Space, the final frontier. These are the voyages of the Starship 'Enterprise.' Its continuing mission: to seek out knew life and new civilization, to boldly go where no one has gone, before."

Cool ship.

Opening credits over a starfield.

Stardate 41153.7

Denab IV

solve the mystery of Farpoint Station

Data doesn't know "snoop"

Troi detects a powerful mind,

Q's wall

Picard hates the Red Alert noise

Q in renaissance sailer outfit, speaks old English

Freezes ops Lt Torres who pulls a phaser on Q, stun setting.

Q in mid 1900s military uniform

Q as mid 2000s drugged military

Worf wants to clear the trash

Picard kinda suggests prosecution and judgement

Q leaves,

Worf and Tasha want to fight, Troi thinks its a bad idea, Picard hopes to outrun Q

Picard calls for communication silence, but gives print-out announcements through the ship

Q's wall turns to a ball and chases the Enterprise past it's maximum speed

the ball breaks warp 9.9

call for separation of the ship, Worf wants to take the battle bridge, but gets the saucer.

drive section evacuated

O'Brian first words: All decks acknowledging, sir

Theme plays while separating.

cool turn around for the drive section after separation

after the separation is complete, the torpedoes that were fired before separation, finally detonate...

Ship comes to a stop, and waits a few minutes before the Q-ball arrives, despite its vastly higher speed.

Picard surrenders. Troi very concerned

Then to the fun of the trial. opens with gun fire.....

"The prisoners will all stand." Picard sits down

Mid 21st century style trial

Such a cool entrance for Q as the judge, very dramatic.

Banners are a black eagle on a red field. very fascist

Tasha attacks the bailiff with the gun, whom gets killed, then picard asks if the trial will be fair...after one of the guards was just executed... and then it's totally ignored that the guard was killed, and then the crew (humans) are charged as a barbaric race....

Data takes opening statements by mentioning 2036 and a New United Nations tready, no Earth citizen shall be held accountable for the action of their race.

Court of 2079, United Earth "nonsense" is abolished.

Tasha says the court is unjust, and gets frozen for it...doubling down on the injustices.

Picard calls out the hypocricy and failure to hold to "fair judgement" and no harm to prisoners.

Q continues to be unjust, making threats, forcing a guilty plea

Picard calls for the crew to be tested as the best of humanity

Riker arrives at Farpoint Station from The USS Hood

geothermal energy for the planet

Riker questions the building materials

Groppler Zorn offers fruit, Riker asks for an apple, and they suddenly appear

Zorn scolds thin air...

Will calls out for Dr Crusher, Wesley replies, and then embarasses his mom by saying she doesn't like men...

Will says something is wrong, Bev questions his entheuseasm and then the bolt of cloth changes...

Riker beams up to stardrive section of Enterprise and meets Tasha

deck 14 turbo lift

Picard starts with making Riker uncomfortable, giving him a mystery, and then showing him impossible footage of Q, with quotes rearranged so that court dialogue was on the bridge at Q's intro.

Riker ordered to manually dock the drive section and saucer, but only gives commands, Data or O'Brian to the actual docking. Overly dramatic

Altair III was the dangerous away mission that Riker refused to let Captain DeSoto to beam down

Picard asks Riker to help him look good in front of kids, Picard doesn't like kids.

Geordie's VISOR explanation to Dr Crusher

Geordie says "sens-ORs" or maybe it was senses...

Riker gets to the bridge, asks for Data, but Data was escorting Admiral McCoy

McCoy insults Data, as almost as bad as a Vulcan

USS Hood, Excelsior class

Q's faded head on the viewscreen, Worf reacts with a phaser

Riker and Troi meeting again, "Emzadie"

Zorn questions a Betazoid, threatens to do business with the Ferengi

Deanna feels dispair from something unknown...

Zorn is very frustraited, he's offered so much to Starfleet,

Picard says the Ferengi are like cannibals

Riker asks an Ensign to help him find Data, she shows him the companels, the computer voice is not Majel.

Riker finds Data in the holodeck, in a forest, trying to whistle "Pop Goes the Weasel"

Data: "Marvelous, how easy humans do that..." sounds like Lore..... especially with Data's slight grin..

Data throws a big rock at the wall....

Wesley shows up and falls into the creek on a loose rock. Data pulls him out of the water, and into the air...

Wesley meets Picard again, while soaking wet...Picard doesn't recognize Wes

Wesley asks Bev for a bridge tour, asks if she's afraid of Picard...

Riker doesn't want to be alone with Troi, and sends her off with Geordie and Tasha

Data can't see as well as Geordie

Deanna has closed off her mind to the emotions, when she reopens it, "pain, pain, unhappiness, terrible despair."

Wes shows up in the turbo lift at the bridge, Picard freaks, then is stunned to see Beverly, and is shocked about Wes being her son...

Picard, "I knew your father."

One of my absolute favorite moments in Trek, as a kid, seeing a kid getting to be part of this ship, loved it. Inspirational.

Wesley knows too much. Annoys Picard.

UFO arrives, measures 12x the volume of Enterprise

UFO fires, Picard wants to react, but Worf diffuses by saying that it's firing on the old Bandi city, not on Farpoint Station, as if that's ok.

Riker goes on, tells the others to return, Deanna panics, doesn't want Riker to be hurt...Riker sends them off under orders

Riker and Data watch the city being destroyed, many casualties....

Picard orders Riker to kidnap Zorn

Picard says shoot the UFO, Q shows up and says that savage races never follow their promises, or something...

Picard orders the ship between the UFO and the planet, but there's no control

Riker and Data get blasted, but are ok, covered in dust.

Zorn is crying and afraid...gets captured by the aliens.

Troi feels satisfaction from the UFO that captured Zorn

Q asks Riker to entertain him, to beam over to the UFO

Riker impresses Q

Picard apologizes to Beverly, and compliments Wesley, but he expresses discomfort, and recognizes her potential discomfort because of her husbands death under his command.

Beverly stands strong, and Picard is humbled, asking to be friends.

Away team beams to UFO, finds the same hallways as below the Station.

Troi feels anger and hate from the UFO towards the Bandi city.

Data making some comments, thinks is wrong that he does so much, but Riker tells him to keep "providing narration"....

Zorn being tortured - holy crap that's brutal

Riker and Data phaser the field holding Zorn, UFO gets mad

Q shows up on Enterprise, ship communications gone down, unable to bring back Riker

Picard, desperate, offers to do whatever Q says...Away team plus Zorn returned to Enterprise bridge, by the UFO creature.

Q pushes Picard to be violent, Picard refuses and chooses wisdom and knowledge. And then acts in compassion, giving power to the imprisoned creature on the planet.

UFO changes into space jelly, beautiful. Such a cool model that the prop department created

Such a cool shot of giving the station energy, giving the captured creature power, and setting it free.

Picard calls out the imprisonment of the creature

Beautiful creature

As the two head off together, holding tentacles, so beautiful! and impressive animation!

Deanna: A feeling of great joy, and gratitude. Great joy, and gratitude. From both of them.

Picard to Q: Why, do you use other life forms to be your recreation? And Q responds: If so, you've not provided the best.

Picard instructs Farpoint Station to be rebuilt

Picard, hopefully other adventures will be much more interesting

Credits scoll upward??!?!?
